BMW to quit Formula One at end of 2009

BMW rocked Formula One on Wednesday by announcing their exit as a team and engine supplier at the end of 2009.

The Munich carmaker's abrupt decision, after a dismal season on the track and with the industry in crisis, leaves the glamour sport with just four manufacturers -- Fiat-owned Ferrari, McLaren's partners Mercedes, Renault and Toyota.

However, three new teams are due to enter next year with others on standby.

Team boss Mario Theissen told reporters that the natural scenario would be for a partner to take over the team that BMW bought from its Swiss founder Peter Sauber in 2005.

BMW's exit is the first prominent withdrawal from the series since Honda quit in December due to tough business conditions.

BMW's decision, taken at a board meeting only on Tuesday, came just as the teams were on the verge of signing a new commercial agreement that would have committed them to at least the end of 2012.

BMW have not supplied engines to any other team and Draeger said they would not do that in future either. He could not rule out redundancies.

India to unveil 20GW solar target under climate plan

India will unveil its first solar power target as soon as September, pledging to boost output from near zero to 20 gigawatts (GW) by 2020 as it firms up its national plan to fight global warming, draft documents show.

The target, which would help India close the gap on solar front-runners like China, is part of an ambitious $19 billion, 30-year scheme that could increase India's leverage in international talks for a new U.N. climate pact in December, one of several measures meant to help cut emissions.

If fully implemented, solar power would be equivalent to one-eighth of India's current installed power base, helping the world's fourth-largest emitter of planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions limit its heavy reliance on dirty coal and assuaging the nagging power deficit that has crimped its growth.

The "National Solar Mission", yet to be formally adopted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's special panel on climate, envisages the creation of a statutory solar authority that would make it mandatory for states to buy some solar power, according to a draft of the plan, which provided detailed proposals for the first time, obtained by Reuters,

"The aspiration is to ensure large-scale deployment of solar generated power for both grid connected as well as distributed and decentralised off-grid provision of commercial energy services," the policy draft said.

Confirming the proposed plan, a top Indian climate official told Reuters that the mission contained "quite stiff" targets that could be announced in September. In June a senior climate official had hoped it could be submitted this month.

"The draft should not change much and the target of 20 GW will be there," the official said on condition of anonymity because the issue was still under discussion.

IBM to offer IT education tourism in India

IBM today announced the launch of an education programme that it said would enable IT professionals and students to come to India and
receive IBM certified training here.

To avail of this offer, an individual needs to register for a course from the IBM Power and IBM System Storage Curriculum, the company said in a statement.

All visa formalities, tickets and accommodation requirements are arranged and facilitated by an IBM training partner, it said.

The IT education tourism programme, slated to start next month, is a unique initiative where IBM has partnered with Stratom IT Solutions, India to introduce IT education tourism as a package for global students and IT professionals.

IBM plans to target around 300 participants in India for a minimum of 30 days this year.

As part of the programme, IBM would offer a comprehensive portfolio of technical training and education services for systems designed for individuals, companies and public organisations to acquire, maintain, and optimise their IT skills, the statement added.

Bill Gates: US curbs on talent a mistake

Microsoft founder Bill Gates said it would be a "big mistake" if the US imposes curbs on the entry of skilled workers from abroad, putting his weight behind "smart people" from countries like India who want to work overseas.

"I can't make any predictions. Immigration policy could get more difficult. Microsoft as a company is very vocal. It would be a big mistake," Gates, here for overseeing the philanthropic activities of his foundation, said in an interaction with India Inc.

"The US Congress is very tough on immigration. But why not make an exception for smart people?" said Gates while addressing an interactive session organised by the National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom).

Even though Gates now devotes most of his time to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, he has always been vocal about his support for migrant professionals that is reflected in the number of such workers at the Microsoft offices in the US.

Gates said he was also keen to partner India in its ambitious plan to issue a single identity card and number to its 1.17 billion citizens for which a new authority has been formed under Infosys Technologies co-founder Nandan Nilekani.

"Microsoft wants to be part of the Unique Identification Authority of India project," he said, adding that he hoped to meet with Nilekani to discuss the issue.

Sony to invest $1 bn in Sharp unit

Sony Corp will likely invest more than 100 bn yen ($1.1 bn) in a planned liquid crystal display TV panel venture with Sharp Corp, the Nikkei business daily reported on Friday.

Sony announced last year that it planned to take a 34 percent stake in a joint venture with Sharp to manage a 380 billion yen LCD panel factory in western Japan, but the two sides have not come to a final agreement on the stake and investment split.

Shares of Sony were up 2.2 percent at 2,380 yen while Sharp rose 2.7 percent to 946 yen, roughly in line with a 2.7 percent gain in Japan's electrical machinery index.

The two companies will finalize plans for the joint venture by the end of July, with Sony's initial investment likely to be about 50-60 billion yen and eventually climbing to more than 100 billion yen, the Nikkei said.

Representatives for Sony and Sharp said nothing has been decided and declined to comment further.

The deal is aimed at allowing Sony to secure enough panels for the growing LCD TV market while giving Sharp a partner to help shoulder the cost of the plant.

Sharp has said that it planned to start operations at the LCD plant in the western Japanese city of Sakai in October to meet recovering flat TV demand.

The factory will be the world's first plant that handles so-called 10th-generation glass substrates, which are bigger than earlier-generation substrates and help reduce per-panel production costs.

Abhinaya

Abhinaya who plays one of the role of the heroine in Nadodigal is different in the sense that she can neither speak nor hear. Her voice has been dubbed for the movie.Abhinaya has also donned a role in Selvaraghavan’s ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’.

Model-turned-actress, Abhinaya got recognition with her role as a sister to Sasikumar in Nadodigal.

The charming diva recently quoted in the media about her innings in the glam-world saying, “My father is an ex serviceman.

Currently he is acting in small roles. So he permitted me to do modeling. He used to correct me whenever I commit mistakes in modeling fields.

Even her mother came for her rescue, helping her with the diction, “My mother use to help me in my pronunciations.

One day I was acting in an Ad film near Hyderabad Airport when some Kerala Ad film makers were speaking to my father. They took my photo album.

One day all of a sudden Samudrakani phoned my father. He said that he saw my photos in Kerala when he was in search for an actress.” Further she added, “There is no hero or heroine in this film. There are 7 important characters in this film. You are in one of that role.

I was little hesitant to do the role because it was the role of Sasikumar’s sister. But my father liked the story very much. Because of this I acted in this film. Since I had acted in Ad films and I did not find any difficulty in acting in these films.

It was jolly during the shooting. In the sentiment scenes I cried automatically because I was so imbibed in the role. I want to act in many films especially in different type of roles.”

New job cut in CISCO

US computer networking giant Cisco Systems has laid off between 600 and 700 employees at its headquarters in San Jose, California, in a bid to reduce costs amid slow sales, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

The company has also cut jobs at other branches in the United States, although the total number was not immediately clear, the business daily said, citing a person familiar with the matter.

"We are doing everything possible to minimize the impact on employees affected by the limited restructuring," a Cisco spokesman told the Journal.

In February, the group had said it would likely eliminate between 1,500 to 2,000 employees, or three per cent of its workforce. In late April, the company had some 66,550 employees.

After Cisco reported a 24 per cent drop in its net profit, or 1.3 billion dollars, in the third quarter, chief executive John Chambers nonetheless said in May that he saw signs of stabilization in the group's sales.

Bill Gates urges India to move from low-cost to R&D

Billionaire Bill Gates on Friday urged India to move away from low-cost labour toward high-end research and development to keep its giant IT sector competitive.

On a visit to New Delhi, the co-founder of Microsoft Corp called on the Indian government to speed up its commitment to R&D and to boost low number of home-grown PhD students.

Gates told a panel discussion that India's "IT success story" should strive to add value and move away from low-cost labour as other developing countries play catch-up.

"At first some of that (IT boom) was built on low-cost labour. And, of course, as time goes on, you don't want to have that as the only differentiator and it's not a sustainable thing, because others can come along with that as well," Gates said.

India's R&D sector has made strides in recent years and attracted some big foreign hitters, including Microsoft, in keeping with its IT- and service-driven economic boom.

But hampered by structural problems and a lack of government commitment, India's R&D still lags behind the United States and Asian rival China. China has more than 1,100 R&D centres compared to less than 800 in India.

"Leading companies here are contributing a lot of ideas and techniques. Even more of that has to happen and bring it to its full potential," Gates said.

"You've got to get the government, universities ... and companies like Microsoft to deepen their commitment to R&D."

India produces 100 computer science PhDs a year -- a fraction of China or the U.S -- even as it exports a large number of students abroad. While English-speaking India is cheaper than China for R&D, New Delhi gives few incentives to researchers.

Beijing offers incentives like tax breaks for R&D centres, and special economic zones provide infrastructure for hi-tech and R&D industries.

Massa under sedation after brain scan

Ferrari's Felipe Massa will be kept under sedation for 48 hours after fracturing his skull in a freak accident at the Hungarian Grand Prix, a hospital doctor attending the Formula One driver said on Sunday.

Peter Bazso said the 28-year-old Brazilian was in a stable condition after surgery at Budapest's AEK military hospital on Saturday. A brain scan on Sunday had produced reassuring results.

"It brought the result that we had expected concerning an injury of this type," he said.

The doctor said Massa nonetheless remained in intensive care and in an "acute phase" of treatment.

He was woken from sedation briefly on Sunday after family members arrived, but then put back. The doctor said Massa will remain in that state for 48 hours before being awakened again.

Bazso declined to go into details about the length or type of further treatment.

Last year's championship runner-up was flown to hospital after being hit on the head by bouncing debris from compatriot Rubens Barrichello's Brawn during Saturday's qualifying.

A Defence Ministry official said on Saturday that the driver had been in a "serious, life-threatening condition" before the emergency operation.

Alonso's Renault team suspended for Valencia

Spaniard Fernando Alonso's Renault Formula One team were suspended from the next race in Valencia on Sunday after a wheel came off his car during the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Race stewards ruled that Renault had released Alonso from a pit stop knowing that the wheel was not properly secured and then failing to tell the driver.

The incident came a week after 18-year-old Briton Henry Surtees, son of Ferrari's 1964 world champion John, died in a Formula two race at Brands Hatch after being struck by a loose wheel bouncing across the track.

The European Grand Prix in Valencia is on Aug. 23.

Lewis Hamilton wins Hungarian Grand Prix

Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday to signal McLaren's return to form after a run of 10 races without success.

Kimi Raikkonen, driving the only Ferrari in the race after Brazilian team mate Felipe Massa suffered a serious head injury in qualifying, was second but under investigation by stewards for colliding with Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel at the start.

Australian Mark Webber finished third for Red Bull to go second in the championship, 18.5 points behind Britain's Jenson Button with seven races remaining. Vettel, who had been second, failed to finish.

Brawn GP's Button had a frustrating afternoon in the Hungarian heat, struggling to get performance out of the car's tyres and finishing a disappointing seventh after starting eighth.

Ganguly likely to be KKR captain again

Sources say that former Indian Captain Sourav Ganguly could be made as the Kolkata Knight Riders captain for the IPL season3 due to the non-availability of Brendun Mccullum.

Sources also say that Ganguly and the KKR franchise owner Shah Rukh Khan had a meeting in London to discuss on the captaincy of Kolkata Knight Riders.

Chennai unit top producer for Nokia

Nokia’s Chennai factory is now the Finnish giant’s largest cellphone manufacturing facility by volume in the world, edging past China.

China has two factories while Chennai has one. Nokia’s Chennai plant has now gone past the larger of the two Chinese factories, which till date was the company’s largest in the world.

Nokia factory - Chennai

While the company refuses to divulge the annual capacity at its Chennai factory, a senior member of its global planning team said the unit is now indeed its largest manufacturing facility. Unofficial reports suggest Chennai manufactures over 100 million phones every year.

Interestingly, women make up over 70% of the 8,000-strong employee pool at the Chennai plant and are involved in a mix of running productions lines, maintenance and assembly & testing operations.
Nokia operates nine state-of-the-art mobile phone manufacturing units in India, Finland, China, Korea, Mexico, Brazil, Romania and Hungary.

“The Chennai factory is the largest in Nokia’s global ecosystem, although the dynamics in terms of product line vary in each market. But the international markets that we serve out of Chennai have seen the largest growth in terms of volume. At present, Nokia ships GSM phones from the Chennai factory to over 50 markets spanning South-East Asia-Pacific (including Australia), India, the Middle East and Africa,” said the senior official who did not wish to be named.

Balochistan

Balochistan, an immense desert comprising almost 48% of Pakistan's area, rich in uranium and copper, potentially very rich in oil, and producing more than one-third of Pakistan's natural gas, accounts for less than 4% of Pakistan's 173 million citizens. Strategically, Balochistan is mouth-watering: east of Iran, south of Afghanistan, and boasting three Arabian sea ports, including Gwadar, practically at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz. (Source). Balochis are largely tribal and consider themselves much closer to the Afghans than the rest of Pakistanis.

When India and Pakistan eventually gained independence from the British in August 1947, provinces were given the choice of either joining Pakistan or India or being independent. Khan of Kalat, Mir Ahmed Yar Khan declared Kalat's independence.

The Governor General Lord Mountbatten of Burma decided that the province would not survive as an independent entity and that offer was taken off the table.(Source)

As claimed by Baloch nationalists,

"Baloch nation has gone through a lot since March 23, 1948, when the Pakistan army moved in and occupied Kalat, the capital of the free Balochistan. After experiencing only 227 days of freedom in which we elected our representative assembly and wrote a constitution as a free nation of this global village. Pakistan's army trampled every thing under their boots - Baloch nation's pride, freedom, representative assembly, constitution and mostly our mother land and declared it a part of Pakistan." (Source)

There have been several conflicts between the Baloch separatists and the Pakistan army:

1. First conflict 1948 (led by Mir Ahmad Yar Khan)
2. Second conflict (1958-59 led by Nawab Nowroz Khan)
3. Third conflict 1963-69 (led by Sher Mohammad Bijarani Marri)
4. Fourth conflict 1973-77 (led by Nawab Khair Baksh Marri)
5. Fifth conflict 2004-to date (lead by Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti and Mir Balach Marri)

The Pakistani response to the demands of the separatists has often been brutal. Particularly in the mid-1970's, when the Pakistani Army brutally crushed the Baloch struggle. Perhaps it came in the backdrop of the recently lost war to India which had led to the creation of Bangladesh and Pakistan could not afford to loose another major province. In August 2006, the Pakistani army allegedly killed Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, 79 years old, a very respected leader of the Baloch struggle.

The Grievances:

The Baloch struggle and their demands are not entirely unjustified. The local grievances have seldom been taken seriously. Islamabad pays a pittance in royalties for the Balochis for exploiting its natural resources, and development aid is negligible; Balochistan is treated as a backwater and the Balochis remain largely poor and illiterate.

Moreover, Pakistan has essentially been ruled by its millitary for most of its 60 years of independence. Even when under civilian rule, millitary has flexed its muscles and indirectly controlled the govt. Pakistani millitary has traditionally been dominated by Punjabis (Punjab constitutes 60% of the population of Pakistan). It is this domination by just one selected group that has aggravated the problem as millitary plays a major role in Pakistan in shaping the policies. It must also be noted that in the undivided Pakistan, the Bengalis were hardly given any representation either in the millitary or in the civil services and there a complete domination of Punjabis. (Source)

The Indo-Pak joint statement

This certainly isn't the first instance when Pakistan has accused India of fomenting trouble in Balochistan, nor is it the last such instance. It must be noted that India does not share any border with Balochistan and hence it cannot support the Baloch struggle (if at all it wants to) in the same way as the state of Pakistan does to the Kashmiri struggle.

Pakistan has also accussed that India is using Afghanistan's territory to launch attacks in Balochistan and is training Balochis. Ofcourse it is difficult to ascertain the truth since just like Pakistan has never accepted the alleged role of its Army and ISI for the terrorism in India, India is unlikely to ever accept such a charge.

But the problem now is that Pakistan has been successful in equating terrorism in India to terrorism in Balochistan. The two can hardly be equated.

1. As already mentioned, India does not shares a border with Balochistan.
2. Terrorist groups in Pakistan like LeT have launched daring attacks on the Indian establishment like the attack on Indian Parliament or the Mumbai attacks. On the other hand, Balochi attacks have been of a much smaller scale.
3. The Baloch struggle existed even before the 2001, when the Afghanistan was ruled by the Pak-friendly Taliban. On the other hand, Kashmir struggle has almost from the very beginning, involved a Pakistani hand. This is true even in 1947-48 when Pakistani sent its armed forces under the cover of the tribals. This strategy continued in subsequent war of 1965 and Kargil war of 1999.

4. The Baloch struggle is hardly given any coverage in the Pak-media as compared to the Taliban struggle. Clearly, Taliban is a far bigger threat to Pakistan.

5. Soon after the attack on Sri Lankan team, Pakistani govt. denied any Indian involvement and instead pointed towards Taliban. However, now it wants to paint the Baloch threat to be much graver so that it can be equated to the terrorism that India is facing, and thus countering the advantage that India holds with respect to the world opinion.

Can Baloch struggle ever reach the same level as that of Kashmir?

In the 1971 war, India defeated Pakistan and helped in creation of Bangladesh. In that case, India was able to use the unrest in Bangladesh against the Pakistani rule to its advantage. Even if the Indian state today wanted to use Baloch struggle to further balkanize Pakistan, it would be extremely difficult, almost impossible.

As already mentioned, Baloch population constitutes just 4% of the total population of Pakistan. In such small numbers, they hardly can hope to win against the Pakistani state without external help. Moreover, India does not shares any borders with Balochistan. Lastly, Pakistani today has nuclear weapons and hence it is unlikely that there would be a full fledged war.

Therefore, Baloch struggle can never really threaten the Pakistani state. Perhaps thats the reason no govt. has been serious enough to look into their greviances. Balochistan is a tool to counter India, something that Pakistan has successfully used very skillfully.

India has nothing to do with Balochistan: Chidambaram

Aiming to stem the controversy over the inclusion of Balochistan in the India-Pakistan joint statement, home minister P Chidambaram
has asserted that New Delhi has "nothing to do with Pakistan's internal affairs".

"We have nothing to do with Pakistan's internal problems, why should we get involved?" Chidamabaram said in a TV interview.

He was replying to a question on the contentious move by India to allow a mention of "threats to Balochistan" in the joint statement which was issued after talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Yousaf Raza Gilani at Sharm-el-Sheikh in Egypt July 16.

India's first domestically built nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine will be launched on July 26

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s wife Gursharan Kaur is to crack the auspicious coconut marking the historic launch of India’s first nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine at the naval dockyard, Visakhapatnam on July 26. The launch, which naval tradition demands always be performed by a lady, is also the tenth anniversary of the conclusion of the Kargil War.

The Arihant is a copy of the Charlie class nuclear submarine leased from the Soviet Union in 1987.

After spending over a decade cloaked under an obscure project name, the Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) India’s first nuclear submarine finally gets a name: Arihant (destroyer of enemies), pulled out of a list with options like Astra.

But more importantly, the Arihant propels India into an exclusive league of only five other nations who have designed and built their own nuclear-powered submarines. It also marks the first step towards the acquisition of the third leg of the nuclear triad— a secure underwater platform for launching nuclear weapons.

Based on the design of a Charlie-1 submarine which India leased from the former Soviet Union between 1987-’91, the submarine is currently housed in a completely-enclosed dry-dock called the Shipbuilding Centre (SBC) in Visakhapatnam.

The launch, where the long, narrow dry dock is to be flooded with water from the harbor and the submarine floated out, is only the first step.

The Arihant is to be towed out of the SBC into an enclosed pier for its harbor trials. The trials will prove its nuclear power plant and auxiliary systems before it heads out into the Bay of Bengal for sea trials and weapon trials of the 12 K-15 ballistic missiles it is armed with. It will take the submarine between two and three years before commissioning.

In the meantime, the navy will get its first nuclear submarine, the Chakra, an Akula-2 class nuclear powered attack submarine currently undergoing sea trials in the Pacific Ocean off Vladivostok. The Chakra is to be commissioned later this year before sailing to Visakhapatnam. The submarine (known s the Nerpa in Russian service) is being acquired on a ten-year lease from Russia under a secret agreement signed in January 2004. India paid $ 650 million for the completion and lease of the submarine which is being acquired to rapidly train crews to man the fleet of three nuclear submarines which are to be inducted by 2015. Hull sections of two more ATVs have been completed by L&T at its Hazira facility and are to be transported to the SBC for assembling soon after the Arihant vacates dock space.

China delays launch of first space telescope to 2012

China has delayed the launch of its first space telescope, designed to detect black holes, by two years to 2012 for cost reasons, the Xinhua news agency said on Thursday.

China has staked a good deal of national pride in its space program, which gained prominence when it put its first "taikonauts" in orbit in 2003.

Its space efforts have spurred rival India to expand its own space capabilities, while its successful downing of a defunct communications satellite in 2007 generated some concern among U.S. security analysts.

The 1 billion yuan ($146.4 million) telescope launch had been scheduled for 2010, but it was postponed for two years due to financial problems, Li Tipei, an academic with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the chief scientist of the program, told Xinhua without elaborating.

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) will comprise three to four single telescopes equipped with hard X-ray detectors, instead of optical lenses, Li said. It is being developed by CAS, the Ministry of Science and Tsinghua University, the nation's premier engineering school.

The one-ton space telescope and its carrier satellite is expected to enter orbit approximately 500 km (300 miles) over the Earth's surface, and circle the Earth for four years.

China plans to land a vehicle on the moon in 2012.

Kargil War - War Against Terror

The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil conflict, was an armed conflict between India and Pakistan that took place between May and July 1999 in the Kargil district of Kashmir.

The cause of the war was the infiltration of Pakistani soldiers and Kashmiri militants into positions on the Indian side of the Line of Control.

During and directly after the war, Pakistan blamed the fighting entirely on independent Kashmiri insurgents, but documents left behind by casualties and later statements by Pakistan's Prime Minister and Chief of Army Staff showed involvement of Pakistani paramilitary forces.

The Indian Army, supported by the Indian Air Force, attacked the Pakistani positions and, with international diplomatic support, eventually forced a Pakistani withdrawal across the Line of Control (LoC).It is believed that the planning for the operation, by Pakistan, may have occurred about as early as the autumn of 1998.

Chaminda Vaas retired from test cricket

Chaminda Vaas is easily the most penetrative and successful new-ball bowler Sri Lanka have had, and he has served his country well.

He swings and seams the ball with skill, his trademark delivery being the late indipper.

However, he also bowls a carefully disguised offcutter, and has recently added reverse-swing to his armoury, a skill that has made him a consistent wicket-taker even on bland subcontinental pitches.

He outbowled New Zealand's seamers in green conditions at Napier to give Sri Lanka their first win in an overseas Test, in 1994-95.

In 2001-02 he made a quantum leap, taking 26 wickets in the 3-0 rout of West Indies, becoming only the second fast bowler, after Imran Khan, to take 14 wickets in a match in the subcontinent. He then went on to take the first-ever ODI eight-for, against Zimbabwe, which included a hat-trick.

He also claimed a hat-trick with the first three balls of the match against Bangladesh in the 2003 World Cup.

Vaas reached the 300-wicket milestone in Tests against India in 2005-06, having passed the mark in ODIs on the tour to Zimbabwe. In 2004 he also gained overdue recognition for his talent when he was selected for the World XI at the inaugural ICC Awards.

Vaas is easily Sri Lanka's second-most successful bowler - after Muttiah Muralitharan - in both forms of the game. His approach to his batting is equally sincere and in recent years he has gradually gained recognition as a useful allrounder.

He waited 97 Tests for his maiden century, against Bangladesh, and soon after, became the third Sri Lankan to play 100 Tests or more.

In August 2008, Vaas crossed yet another milestone when he had Yuvraj Singh caught for a duck in Colombo to get his 400th ODI wicket and become the fourth bowler to reach the landmark.

In July 2009, Vaas announced his retirement from Tests but said he will continue to play one-dayers and Twenty20s till the 2011 World Cup.
