Life

That looks like India,” shouts Mayuri (9), pointing at a giant Earth dome at Ahmedabad’s Science City. With her is Parth Vasavada (22). Parth runs a construction company in Ahmedabad. Mayuri Maheshwari’s father is a struggling labourer in Bhuj. The Kutch earthquake in 2001 shattered his house — and life. Parth was 19 when he met Mayuri at a hostel for bright kids from poor families who are enrolled in private schools through an NGO, Visamo Kids. Mayuri now waits for Sundays, when Parth takes her out to buy books, watch movies, visit interesting places and tutor her. Mayuri wants to become a dancer. Or maybe a doctor. “I’ll make up my mind later. What do you say, bhaiya?” quizzes Mayuri. Parth smiles. She just made his day.
